Opus in 2008 and beyond!

Happy New Year, it has been a long time since we last updated this page so please stick with us as we run you through a few updates.

Opus Creations is proud to announce the launch of a brand new event, OPUS SESSIONS on Thursday 21st Feb 2008 @ DQ. This event aims to bring a refreshing flavour to the increasingly bland beat scene in the city. With the bigger clubs focusing more and more on the commercially successful elements in dance music, Sessions will offer a plethora of cutting edge and legendary pioneers of beat music. Combining elements of drum and bass, heavy funk, hip hop, electronica, nu jazz and jungle with live graff artists, projections and personalised decor. Opus invites you to the ultimate session. Get involved every 3rd Thursday of the month @ DQ, Fitzwilliam St, Sheffield.

After a year of weekly Wednesday shows @ Upstairs of DQ, Opus has amalgamated it's unsigned live showcase, "FEED YOUR HEAD" with its monthly charity event. OPUS presents "GOOD DEEDS" will now take place on the first Wednesday of each month @ Upstairs and will continue to present the finest live acts from around Sheffield and beyond as well as raising awareness and money for charities and good local causes at the same time. Check out the first of these new events on Wednesday 6th Feb @ Upstairs of DQ.

STUDIO 45, part of the Opus Group is running a special offer for new clients: FOR ONE DAY IN THE ALL NEW STUDIO 45. 3 Tracks recorded, mixed and mastered. Price includes 8 hours studio time and 2 copies of your demo. Tel: 0114 221 3800.

NOW THEN is a Sheffield based free magazine launching in April 2008. It will act as a forum for non-corporate and independent media and politic. Brought to you by Opus Creations we will cover a wide range of independent musics, arts, literature, film and theatre; as well as discussing important local and international news issues.

Thanks for sticking with us and we hope to see you at one of our events, in the studio or reading a copy of Now Then in the very near future!

All the best,

Opus Creations

Opus Plans for the Upstairs Lounge Bar (Above DQ!) NOW WEEKLY WEDNESDAYS! 8.30 DOORS - FREE ENTRY!

Basically we’ve been given the opportunity to run a weekly night at this venue. We’re pretty chuffed since the staff are amazing and the venues pretty much a joke. (In an extremely positive way!)

Up until now we’ve been running a fortnightly mix of bands and beats of a wide variety of styles and tastes; with the likes of acts like The Broken Door, DJ4D, The Laze, Sophie Toes and Mean Poppa Lean to name but a few.

We’ve also been putting these bountiful events on for FREE as we believed and still do that it is exposure to a sizeable audience that not only provokes bands to improvement but also shows them how good they are in the first place.

However we’ve found that the prospect of putting on a night of such variety every week has caused a terrifying shrinking and shrivelling in our collective balls. We are therefore going to use this weekly opportunity to put forward another Opus project we’ve had in mind for some months now. Namely an unsigned or independently labelled beats night, hosting a wide range of featured DJ’s playing a whole host of different variations of music from Folk to blues, to Dubstep to D'n'B. The general plan of action is to gradually increase the tempo of the music as the night goes on. Sensible. Logical. Soothing. The idea being that you – the audience are calmly encouraged from nodding your heads to moving your legs, to full on dancing. We’ll take any movers and shakers here!

So to clarify this rather confusing babble of syllabic sound. There is an Opus event every Wednesday at the Upstairs Bar above DQ. However on alternate weeks one will be a DJ night featuring many of the countries prime unsigned vinyl crew. Where as the other Wednesday will continue as usual featuring both bands and DJ’s – full of variety, style and cocktails. A little like Sunny D in that respect.

Both of these excellent nights will, for the foreseeable month be, FREE ENTRY so you’ve all got nowt to excuse your lack of presence. So FEED YOUR HEADS! Support the people who are innovating before you shrivel like a raisin and play Britney at your wedding.

Opus sell out D'n'R Bar

Good to see you all there on Friday. Many thanks to all the acts involved. You were all fucking superb.
We all felt pretty messy the morning after so we'll take that with an encouraging nod for a night well spent.

It's pretty tough to write this little review without coming across a little bias or very cheesy - but our Opus view is, that the night was a great success and one we will remember fondly, for all the good and friendly heads involved; audience and artsits alike, thankyou.

This is an idea we’ve been tossing over for a few months – hell yeah. We aim to get a first issue out by February of next year, inspired by the likes of Sheffield’s Sandman and Leeds ‘No quarter’ – both of which all who read this, should read. (Found on yey old myspace) Anyone who would like to be involved in the direction or content of this magazine please get in contact through email, as we’re keen for input and ideas about what everyone would like to see in a new free mag.

Help Save Rare n Racy!!

We’ll be putting our mitts on and getting involved with the Rare N Racy benefit gigs. Rare n Racy Books and Records - if you haven’t guessed it already is a shop, a shop selling proper good books CD’s and Vinyl. The shop has been around since the late sixties and represents a dying breed of independent shops set up by independently minded people for there own enjoyment. Due to recent rent increases in the surrounding areas THANKYOU! 2 BEDROOM FUCKING LUXURY APARTMENTS - the shop is in need of financial and public support. Please go down there if you ever get the chance, witness the wonder of a shop that is enthused by its product rather than it’s sales.

The 1st gig planned involved the much loved ‘The Laze’ along with ‘Mojo and the Beatniks and blues master Alex Haynes.

Hopefully see you all down there...!!

New Night! New Venue

It’s at the bottom of Corporation St, adjacent to the river and our chance to showcase some of the unplugged acts that have caught our collective eyes while being in Sheffield. Our hope is that with this evening we can present a consistent quality while still allowing a space for those artists who simply need more time spent in front of an audience. We will also be showcasing local visual artists as well as encouraging poets, speakers and any other number of performance genres. Opus begin their unplugged and open mic nights at The Riverside Café and Bar (1. Mowbray St)
